Saturday 3rd December
Wales v Wallabies at The Millennium Stadium
Welsh wing Shane Williams is poised to make a final appearance against for his country against the Wallabies but fellow Test veteran Stephen Jones has been left out of the 28 man squad. 34-year-old Williams, Wales’ record Test try-scorer, will get a massive send-off in Cardiff on Saturday in a rematch of the World Cup bronze medal match.
A scrappy encounter in Auckland eventually went Australia’s way by 21-18 but only after being pushed all the way by a much-improved Wales side. That game may not be a true reflection of the teams respective merits as bronze medal matches are always difficult to get fully motivated for. However, it will have offered further encouragement to the Welsh that they are able to mix it with the best. Fourth place still represented Wales best World Cup performance since the inaugural competition 24 years ago and they now look to end their year in style.
Wallabies’ Coach Robbie Deans named a 26 man touring party for the matches against the Barbarians and Wales. Although he is without several players from the World Cup, there was no sign of any weakness in their emphatic victory against the Barbarians on Saturday. Tries by James Horwill (2), Lachie Turner (2), Digby Ioane (2), Rob Horne and Radike Samo accompanied by James O’Connor’s kicking resulted in a thumping 60-11 win for the Wallabies. Australia have now won their last eight matches against the Barbarians.
