Centrebet – Super Bowl XLVI

Super Bowl XLVI

An overtime field goal by Lawrence Tynes carried the New York Giants to a Super Bowl showdown against New England Patriots. Scottish-born Tynes slotted over from 31 yards to clinch a 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game at Candlestick Park. The Giants now have a chance to repeat their 2008 Super Bowl success over the Patriots.

Remarkably, Tynes also kicked the winning field goal against Green Bay to take the Giants to the Super Bowl four years ago. Eli Manning was outstanding for the Giants in a game where defences dominated. Manning threw two touchdown passes and went 32-of-58 for 316 yards. A 25-yard field goal by David Akers pulled the 49ers level at 17-17 to send the game into overtime but an error by Kyle Williams let the Giants in with a chance to snatch victory. Williams fumbled possession on the 24-yard line and was stripped of the ball after he had taken Steve Weatherford’s punt and the Giants ran three times to set up Tynes for his dramatic winning kick.

The New England Patriots beat the Baltimore Ravens 23-20 on Sunday after Ravens’ kicker Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal to force overtime. The Ravens could have won it two plays earlier, but wide receiver Lee Evans was stripped of the ball in the end zone by cornerback Sterling Moore. The Patriots claimed their fifth AFC championship in the last 11 seasons.
