About Rugby League
Rugby League is a very popular game in Australia. It came out of the Rugby School in England. It is a type of football. Players are allowed to carry the ball. They aren’t limited to only kicking it. There are two major kinds of rugby, Rugby League and Rugby Union. There are differences in rules and players. They are both played by both amatuers and professionals. The season runs from autumn to spring.
Around the world Rugby League is governed by the Rugby League International Federation. In Australia the group is the National Rugby League. The NRL consists of 16 teams. Eight of the clubs are based in or around Sydney. The rest are based along the east coast of Australia, except for the one in New Zealand. The next step down has clubs all over Australia. Since the NRL was founded in 1998 there have been 23 different clubs.
Although the NRL wasn’t founded until 1998 there was an organization that existed before it. That is the NSWRL that was founded back in 1908. There are two Rugby League clubs that were members of that league that are still members of the NRL. They are the North Sydney Rabbitohs and the Sydney Roosters. Soon thereafter there were other clubs from the Sydney area that joined the league. There are other clubs in the Sydney area that at one time tried to play under the NRL but play with their own leagues instead.
The Australian National Rugby League is part of the RLIF. It also includes teams from the U.S., Russia, Serbia and many European countries. There are two major professional competitions in this federation.
Rugby is a sport that engenders fierce loyalties and rivalries. There are many people who bleed the colors of their favorite teams. They follow the teams and watch all the games.
