About A League

The A-League is the top Australasian professional football (soccer) league. It was founded as recently as 2004 and is governed by Football Federation Australia (FFA). It was the successor of the National Soccer League which had been running since 1977 and kicked off its inaugural season in August 2005. It is sponsored by Hyundai Motor Company Australia and Qantas, and is officially known as the Hyundai A-League. The season runs from early August to February of the following year.

The League originally had eight teams: Adelaide United, Central Coast Mariners, Melbourne Victory, Newcastle Jets, New Zealand Knights (since replaced by Wellington Phoenix), Perth Glory, Queensland Roar and Sydney FC. The competition expanded to 10 teams in 2009/10 to include Gold Coast and North Queensland Fury. However, North Queensland Fury were forced to close at the end of the season due to financial instability. The tenth league spot is now taken by Melbourne Heart who share AAMI Park with their city rivals Melbourne Victory.

The competition consists of 30 home-and-away rounds, with teams playing each other three times. The teams which are allotted two home matches against an opponent in one season are given one home match against that opponent in the following season. There are 3 points for a win and one point for a draw. At the end of the season, the team at the top of the table is crowned A-League Premiers, and is entered into the AFC Champions League.

The top six teams in the League go through to the finals series. The top two teams compete over two legs (with ties decided by the away goals rule, including extra time), the winner progressing straight to and hosting the Grand Final.

The third and sixth placed teams play against each other; the same for the fourth and fifth placed teams. The winners of these matches then meet each other with the winner playing in a Preliminary Final against the loser of the two-legged match between the top two teams. The winner of this match goes through to the Grand Final. This team also goes forward to the AFC Champions League, although if the team that wins the League goes through to the Grand Final then the other finalists will be awarded the second spot in the competition, irrespective of the result. Unlike most European leagues, there is no system for promotion and relegation of teams.

From the start of the inaugural 2005 season, TV coverage has been restricted to the subscription-only Fox Sport channel which obtained exclusive rights until 2012. This means that A-League games cannot presently be viewed free-to-air but there has been much debate as regards the possible renewal of this license.

The A-League is definitely a special Australian soccer or football league. Australian Football Federation operates the overseeing body of this league. People can easily wager an extremely big deal on the games utilizing the Internet. Just about every match up recognizes the victorious team honored acquires three rivalry points, or perhaps the situation associated with a draw, the coaches and teams acquire a single point each accrued, at the end of the season. At the finalization of the normal season, teams get rankings from one through up to ten with the top rated six squads moving on towards the finals series. The highest number of points acquired for the duration of the standard season establishes the positioning.
